Job Description:
Summary The Sheetmetal Mechanic specializes in the fabrication,
installation, and finishing of high-visibility interior spaces
aboard U.S. Navy ships. This position focuses on habitability
improvements, including laminate work, decorative trim, marine
furniture installation, bulkhead systems, false overhead systems
and finishing details in premium spaces such as Captains
Staterooms, Wardrooms, XO/CO cabins, and Flag Officer offices.
Duties Responsibilities Install various sheet metal outfitting
components, including but not limited to bunks, lockers, desks,
shelves and chairs. Fabricate, cut, and install high-pressure
laminate (HPL) surfaces for furniture, desktops, tables, bulkheads,
and storage fixtures. Install decorative crown molding, baseboards,
and transition trim tailored to shipboard conditions. Construct and
install wainscoting systems, including layout, panel fabrication,
scribing, and finishing. Apply marine-grade wall coverings (vinyl,
laminate, insulation-backed coverings, and acoustic panels) with
high accuracy and clean finish. Build, install, and align
decorative bulkheads and panel systems, ensuring tight seams, clean
edges, and proper structural reinforcement. Fabricate and install
marine furniture, including lockers, desks, credenzas, shelving,
seating structures, berthing components, and cabinetry. Construct
and fit custom pieces designed for Flag Officer staterooms and VIP
habitability spaces. Modify and rework existing furniture to meet
updated Navy specifications or modernization plans. Install drawer
systems, latches, hinges, closures, and shock-mounted components
suited for shipboard movement and vibration. Scribe and fit
materials around curved or irregular bulkheads, overheads, and
ships structures for a seamless appearance. Install decorative
ceilings, soffits, and panel systems in high-visibility
compartments. Mount and secure components using marine-approved
adhesives, mechanical fasteners, and NAVSEA-approved installation
methods. Conduct precision measurements using levels, squares,
laser lines, and pattern templates to ensure professional finish
quality. Fabricate support structures, brackets, and reinforcement
backing for installed furniture and wall systems. Install metal
framing for bulkheads and overheads prior to finishing work. Cut,
bend, and install sheet metal components necessary to support
habitability furniture and interior systems. Proficient at fitting,
scribing, installing various foundations for furniture and sheet
metal equipment to be welded or bolted. Layout, fit and install
false overheads (mechanically attached and drop ceilings) and false
bulkheads made from aluminum, stainless and laminate. This includes
the insulation of cribbing and grid work to support the false
bulkheads and overheads. Understanding and using a variety of
portable and hand tools used in the trade. Also possess and
maintain personal hand tools necessary to accomplish their trade.
Read and interpret Chemist and Competent Person reports to ensure
safe conditions for hot work. Conduct self-inspections to ensure
work meets quality standards and complies with applicable drawings
and specifications. Provide guidance and train junior craftsmen,
providing direction as a senior mechanic when required. Maintain a
good attendance record, demonstrate a positive and professional
attitude, work well with others, take pride in your work, and be
receptive to constructive feedback from mentors (supervisor, PMT,
etc.). Experience Requirements 4 - 6 years of experience as a
Sheetmetal Mechanic in a shipyard. Other Requirements Must be able
to work in various environmental conditions including outdoor
weather, heights, confined spaces, loud noise, and exposure to
airborne particles or fumes. Must be able to wear a respirator as
required for specific tasks and maintain compliance with fit
testing and respiratory protection protocols. Regularly required to
sit, reach, and use hands for handling or operating tools and
equipment. Occasionally required to stoop, bend, squat, crawl, and
climb ladders or structures (e.g., masts, tanks, voids). Must be
able to lift and move up to 50 lbs. independently and seek
assistance for heavier loads. Must be able to pass Drug Screening,
Work Ability Screening. Must be able to obtain a Government
facility security pass and badges at the various shipyards (e.g.,
MHI, BAE, NASSCO, CMSD, NBSD, HII). Availability to work overtime,
weekends, or travel to alternate worksites when project needs
demand. Perform other duties as assigned. Ameri-Force Benefits As
